Who, How and What is Wagr?
Wagr.ai began as an innovative petcare startup in 2016, initially focusing on a smart tracking device for dogs that uses GPS technology to monitor their location and activity. This technology allowed pet owners to ensure the safety and health of their dogs, even from afar.

But then came COVID-19, and they recognized a broader gap in the petcare industry and evolved into a comprehensive smart petcare platform tailored for modern pet parents.
Wagr.ai wanted to be much more than just a smart collar company; and so it became a comprehensive smart petcare platform designed for modern pet parents.
The big questions for Wagr’s transition to a smart petcare platform…

What are pet parents' key concerns and needs?

How can Wagr foster a community of engaged and informed pet parents?

What are the barriers to adoption for a comprehensive petcare platform?
Phase 1
Bringing Veterinary Care Right to One's Doorstep
Overview
Wagr’s initiative launches with a broad vision: to make veterinary care universally accessible and hassle-free. Here’s what we focused on:
Building a scalable platform that’s ready to grow and evolve, paving the way for Wagr to become a full-service pet care platform.
Preparing for the future, ensuring that today’s solutions are flexible enough to adapt to tomorrow’s challenges.
Geographic Disparity in Access
In India, access to veterinary services varies widely depending on where you live. While cities may have plenty of clinics, rural and semi-urban areas often lack basic veterinary care. This uneven distribution makes it hard for many pet and livestock owners in remote areas to get the help they need for their animals, leading to potential delays in treatment and poorer health outcomes.
Veterinary Professional Shortage
There’s a significant shortfall in the number of trained veterinary professionals available across the country. Despite needing around 72,000 veterinarians, India has only about 43,000, which means many animals might not be receiving the care they need. The situation for para-veterinarians, who assist in surgeries and treatments, is similar, with only 81.57% of the needed workforce available. This shortage limits the ability of veterinary services to expand and meet growing demands.
Inconvenience in Urban Settings
Even in well-serviced urban areas, pet owners face practical difficulties such as long travel times to clinics and extended waiting periods for appointments. These inconveniences can deter pet owners from seeking regular veterinary care, compromising the health and well-being of their pets.
Impact of COVID-19 on Veterinary Services
The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted veterinary services severely. The challenges ranged from shortages in medicines due to supply chain disruptions to temporary closures of veterinary practices. Although declared essential, these services still faced significant operational challenges during the pandemic. Fortunately, efforts are being made to restore and possibly enhance the service levels to pre-pandemic standards, aiming for a robust recovery in the coming years.
Conceptual Approach to the TeleVet Consult Feature
The app was being built with the idea of making veterinary care more accessible for pet owners all across India, focusing on those who may not easily reach a physical vet clinic.
Here’s a simpler breakdown of how we planned for the feature to work and why:
Focusing on Everyday Pet Issues
We designed the app primarily to handle non-urgent pet concerns—things like diet advice or skin rashes. This way, pet owners can get quick, professional advice without leaving home.
By managing these simpler issues online, we could help reduce the strain on physical vet clinics, allowing them to focus more on serious cases that require in-person care.
When to Visit a Vet Clinic
The app includes features to guide pet owners to visit a clinic when the vet thinks it’s necessary. For instance, if a pet shows symptoms that need physical exams or immediate treatment, the app will recommend the nearest vet clinic.
Impact and Vision
By providing easy access to vet services and educational resources, we hoped to improve overall pet health and foster a community where preventive care is a standard practice.
Design DNA & Highlights
While designing the TeleVet Consult feature as the initial offering of the app, we embraced a scalable design vision to ensure that this functionality could evolve and integrate seamlessly with future enhancements and features of the platform. This approach allows us to expand our services and continuously improve the user experience as new needs and technologies emerge.
Designed to calm and reassure during stressful moments
Conversations that feel warm and supportive
Learns and customizes to fit you and your pet’s needs

Phase 2
Pioneering Remote Veterinary Services with the TeleVet Consult App
Problem Statement
We conducted user interviews to get insights and divided them into different groups based on:
where they were in their job journey (looking for jobs or already applying),
how long they've been employed (more than 3 months),
the type of jobs they were interested in (blue and grey-collar), and
their experience level (freshers or experienced).
